We are waiting for many participants to watch the on-demand streaming.

Thank you.

After having conducted in online format for the last two years to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, we are now pleased to announce that the 31st Clean Coal Day International Symposium (2022) to be held in hybrid format combining on-site conference with a limited number of participants and online streaming. This year, we are delighted to have several speakers from overseas coming to Japan to give live presentations.

Coal supports the foundations of society in a wide range of sectors including power generation, steel, cement, and the chemical industry. In the power generation sector, coal-fired power generation has conventionally served as a base-load power source; however, as Carbon Neutrality is progressing and the introduction of renewables expands, it increasingly serves as power adjustment.

The theme of the 31st Clean Coal Day International Symposium 2022 is “Pathway towards Carbon Neutrality ~ in Pursuit of 3E+S* in Coal Utilization~”.

“Carbon Neutrality” means that achieving Global Net Zero by balancing CO2 emission with CO2 sinks such as forests and oceans, and does not mean "stopping the use" of fossil resources, which are hydrocarbon compounds. It is to put the brakes on the state where CO2 emission continues to discharge beyond the global ecosystem absorption capacity, and the target year to realize the balance between CO2 emission and absorption is set as 2050.
At a time when all fossil resources which include oil, natural gas, and coal, must be reviewed in their use, emission control demand for coal is the highest because the amount of CO2 generated in the use of coal in particular is relatively large.
What we need to do for the time being is to reduce emissions through expanding application of HELE (High Efficiency and Low Emission) technology, however it will eventually reach the limit of efficiency. As the next step, it is necessary to implement the so-called CCUS technology, capturing CO2, utilizing it, and storing it in the ground. By combining these technologies, it will be possible to realize blue hydrogen, CO2-free hydrogen producing from coal.
If we can drastically reduce CO2 emissions associated with the use of coal as a fuel for power generation and as a raw material for steelmaking and chemical products, and even achieve zero emissions, coal will continue to be one of the options for energy resources that support humanity. We must advance this new world of coal utilization.

While progressing "Carbon Neutrality," we have to deal with many concurring issues including the soaring resource price and the situation in Ukraine, etc. which affect the stable supply of resources. Under these circumstances, we need to reaffirm our awareness of the "3E + S of coal," that is, Energy Security, Economy, Environmental Conservation and Safety.

We will disseminate this importance to the world together with you at this 31st Clean Coal Day International Symposium.

We look forward to a large number of participants in the symposium.
